Top Reasons not to Upgrade to iOS 8 immediately

iOS 8 may be biggest iOS release ever and there are quite a few reasons to upgrade, but there are also some compelling reasons not to upgrade right away. Here are some of  them for you to ponder while you read about iOS 8 and decide what to do about this latest iOS update from Apple.

Most apps will work, but the full experience won't land just yet :

The vast majority of iPhone and iPad app developers will have used iOS 8 long before it was widely released on Wednesday. That gives them enough time to ensure their apps and services run with the latest software, with the benefits of the new features and developer hooks.

You have an older device and are concerned about performance

Not every device will be compatible with iOS 8.  If you are installing iOS 8 on an older device like an iPad 2 or an iPhone 4s,  then you may want to think hard about making that switch from iOS 7 to iOS 8. iOS 7 runs well on older devices like the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4s. Tack on these extra features in iOS 8 and your performance may slow as you push the capabilities of these older devices to the max, especially iPad 2.

Early adopters may experience a few bugs, quirks.

There’s little doubt that, with Apple’s user base reaching into the hundreds of millions of users worldwide, iOS 8 will be of an exceptionally high quality. But even up to the last minute, the technology giant will be working out flaws, bugs, and quirks in the mobile software. In some cases, Apple will even call it expected behavior — even if it doesn’t seem like it. Those who upgrade on the first day may over time experience some issues or flaws, which are typically addressed in minor iterative updates over the coming weeks and months. It could lead some users frustrated by the slow update process.

You’ll lose your jailbreak

Though we’re sure the jailbreak community is working on an iOS 8 jailbreak, it could be a while before a public jailbreak is released. The first iOS 7 jailbreak was released only at the end of last year, more three months after iOS 7 was released. If you are running a jailbroken version of iOS 7 and don’t wont to lose all those handy jailbreak tweaks, then you should hold off on installing that iOS 8 upgrade. You can always make your iPhone look like iOS 7 or get the iOS 8 features on iOS 7 while you wait.

Downgrading can be tricky :

Once you install iOS 8, you’re stuck with it. That is, unless, you save "blobs" and other files, which the very vast majority of users won’t do, let alone know about. As with other recent major iterations of iOS, it has become increasingly difficult (if not impossible) to downgrade to earlier major versions of iOS. Even with some files saved, it often requires third-party non-Apple apps, and this process is not officially supported.

You don’t want to lose your data and need time to backup

The last thing you want to do is jump head first into an iOS update without making sure all your important data is backed up.  Take your time and go through your phone, especially if you have photos, text messages, financial information, and other documents that you just can’t lose. Don’t rush into the update and put your data at risk. Take your time to  do an iTunes or iCloud backup before you update or backup your photos, videos and documents to a cloud service like Dropbox.
