Article  by Shruti Dwivedi

That's right, the ubiquitous soft drinks that is endorsed by celebrities across the world and claims to be synonymous with happiness and moreover a habit for every age group is really a dangerous product.

The major consumption problem is one can of soft drink (350ml) contains equivalent of 10 teaspoons of liquid sugar, which is enough to fulfill our entire day's caloric requirement without adding any nutritional  value. A person who has a can of soft drink  a day adds an extra 14.5 pounds per year, just from calories. Another synonym for soft drinks can be acidic drinks, as it is the most acidic beverage we can buy with a ph of about 2.5,considering that battery acid has a ph of 1.Phosphoric acid present in them interferes with body's ability to absorb calcium, and interacting with stomach acid slowing the digestion and blocking nutrient absorption. As it creates an acidic environment in kidney tract it is also linked with kidney stones.

No one likes the possession of ugly smile and stumped teeth, so say ‘no' to soft drinks, as citric acid present in them makes as corrosive as battery acids. Aspartame most commonly used as sugar substitutes welcomes hundred different health problems including seizures, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors , diabetes and emotional disorder also increasing risk of metabolic syndrome, which causes belly fat, high blood sugar and raised cholesterol.

High sodium and caffeine content in it dehydrates body causing chronic dehydration. Sodium benzoate, a preservative in most of soft drinks may directly affect lungs as it increases amount of sodium in the body while reducing availability of potassium causing asthma as well as eczema. Appealing  color  of soft drinks are carcinogenic as it comes in part from 4-Methylimidazole a chemical that forms in production of caramel food coloring. Imagine what does that brown stuff really do to our insides??

Can't remember much of anything? It may be because of excessive sugar consumption which reduces production of brain chemical called BDNF. Also presence of BPA gender binding chemical is linked to heart diseases, cancer and birth defects.

On contrary, there are real practical uses of soft drinks, where buying soft drink really seems useful-

  • Remove grease strain from fabric, just soak strain with coke.
  • Remove caked rust on old rusty bolts.
  • Blood comes out of cloths and fabric when soaked in soft drinks for a while
  • Let the mess soak in some soft drink burnt pan will come out clean.
  • Tea kettles can be hard to keep clean, fill with soft drink.
  • To clean toilets, just pour soft drink around bowl.
  • Gum sticks in hair can be removed by dipping section of hair in same.
  • Soft drinks can completely dissolve a tooth.

If soft drinks are good for all these uses, imagine what it does to the stomach lining.
